Destination Wedding Invitations

Tips & Planning Advice

When you decide to plan a destination wedding, your invitations take on a whole new meaning because you are now planning a mini-vacation for your guests.  Below are some suggestions that will assist you in your planning.

1.    Think about the timing of your wedding: Book your invitation designer as soon as you book your venue and wedding date. You want to make sure they’re reserved for your wedding date and you have plenty of time for the creative process as well as production of your invitations. A great invitation designer works with you for the entire process, starting from the collaborative efforts and consultations to then creating your save the dates (which should be mailed 6-8 months before your wedding date) to the invitation suite (mailed out 2-3 months before your wedding date) as well as all of your wedding day paper accessories like menus, hotel welcome letters, place cards and favors. If you allow ample time for the creative process it makes for a stress-free and enjoyable experience.

2.    Find inspiration in your chosen destination wedding location: Look to the culture of the location, artists that are popular in the area and the history of your venue.  These are ways that bring your wedding to life through your invitations, which are art in the paper form. Why did you choose this location? For example, look at patterns of the traditional Mexican ceramic tiles and the vibrant colors.

3.    Make certain the Invitation Text is clear and informative: Make sure you include all travel details, recommended hotels and a complete itinerary of your wedding weekend festivities in your save the dates so guests will know when to book their travel. Also direct them to your wedding website if you have created one.  When you send your invitations, make certain you reiterate the itinerary and plans, so your guests don’t take the first flight home and miss your farewell brunch or post-wedding catamaran cruise because you forgot to include that information for them.

4.    Create a clear and concise Invitation with all enclosures included: Consider your guests’ experience of receiving a beautifully designed, cohesive package all at one time. I recommend thinking about your whole weekend lineup and sending out a unique destination invitation set that informs guests of all that they’re invited to do at your wedding. You don’t want to confuse their experience by sending too many mailings because it will be hard for your guests to stay organized for the event and ends up being more work and money for you.

5.    Choose unique embellishments or woven bamboo paper for your invitations: Your invitations will really stand out in the pile of every day mail if your guests receive a boxed invitation with a real starfish embellishment adorned to a bamboo pocket fold.  Imagine the excitement on your guests face when they open their personalized one of a kind invitation suite.  View some Moore Creative’s Destination wedding invitations by visiting our Invitation Design Gallery.
